The conversation focused on the micromilling of difficult-to-machine materials. Mikron Tool used Eastec as a platform to showcase its latest innovation: state-of-the-art micro-milling cutters tailored to the demanding nuances of micro-milling applications. The new CrazyMill Cool Micro with integrated cooling is a new type of high-performance micro-milling cutter for roughing and finishing demanding materials as stainless steels, cast iron, titanium, heat-resistant alloys and CoCr alloys. It is available in diameters from .008" - .039" (0.2 to 1.0 mm) with a milling depth of up to 5XD. By developing this new product, the engineers at Mikron Tool were the first to succeed in transferring complex high-performance cutting geometries to micro-endmills. The new CrazyMill Cool Micro set unprecedented benchmarks. Thanks to material-specific cutting-edge geometries, which were specially developed for the different machining behavior of materials, the new micro milling cutter combines excellent cutting ability with high stability. The result is a significantly higher removal volume with high shape accuracy and longer tool life. The specific material properties and the very different machining behaviour associated, were one aspect that played a decisive role in the development of this milling cutter. Medical Days 2023 - Glenoid baseplate

Medical days at Mikron Tool with DMG MORI and Motorex Machining, additive manufacturing or hybrid: advantages and disadvantages Which manufacturer is not torn when it comes to defining a future-proof process? The technology race among machine tool manufacturers is in full swing. Constantly improving, highly flexible and dynamic machining centres with a strong trend towards automation offer producers endless possibilities. In addition, younger technologies such as additive manufacturing continue to evolve, currently reinventing itself every three years. Is it an alternative or a useful addition to material-removal manufacturing? This was the aim of the Medical Days at the Technology Centre, to which Mikron Tool and its partners - DMG MORI and Motorex - had invited manufacturers from Switzerland, Germany and Italy. And they did so using a practical example from the field of medical technology. For this purpose, DMG MORI Bielefeld - Additive Manufacturing Business Unit - made a Lasertech 30 DUAL SML available to the team at Mikron Tool's Technology Centre as a "loan", quite unbureaucratically. Thanks to an already existing highly flexible turning and milling centre for six-sided machining (NTX 1000) and a 5-axis machining centre (DMP70), the hybrid production chain was complete, and the machining specialists could start with the test series. For this project, a glenoid base plate (component of a shoulder prosthesis) made of titanium Ti6AI4V ELI was: 1.) classically machined; 2.) additively manufactured; 3.) manufactured in a hybrid process. The "advantages and disadvantages" of the individual manufacturing processes are certainly closely linked to the component to be manufactured. Material, geometry and numbers, these criteria are decisive. Mikron Tool has built a new 1000 m2 two-floor production hall in Agno, Switzerland, which increases the production area to a total of 3500 m2. Discover more! Mikron Tool moves on! Mikron Tool has built a new 1000 m2 two-floor production hall in Agno Switzerland, which increases the production area to a total of 3500 m2. Part of the new premises is already occupied. The micro tool production moved to the 2nd floor and the grinding wheel preparation department was installed last week. During the new construction Mikron Tool replaced the old oil heating system with a state-of-the-art mixing system for heat recovery from production. So no longer fossil fuels were consumed from the beginning of December 2021. Also the old refrigeration system has completely replaced: 350000kWh of electricity is saved per year. Thanks to the expansion of the production site in Agno, Mikron Tool creates additional capacity for production. This is an important signal for the region, because new jobs are created. Of course, also the partners benefit, who can soon expect faster delivery times. And they can count on a partner who invests in the future with vision and focus on sustainability. What this looks like in practice is demonstrated by the company through the machining of a proximal tibia plate made of titanium Ti Gr.2 / 3.7035 / ASTM B348. The customer's requirements were clearly defined: To realize this quality part for an increasing demand at competitive prices. What are the challenges in efficiently manufacturing a volar distal radius plate? Substantial reduction of machining time with good dimensional accuracy, a high surface quality and burr-free edges. The time factor is an important component when it comes to savings. Therefore, it is important to master all components during machining - from the machine and the tool to the entire process. This is Mikron Tool's answer: the perfect interaction of all components and a dynamic process with milling from the solid on a high performing 5-axis CNC machining center with internal cooling of the spindle with 80 bar. This allows Mikron Tool to use tools with the unmatched and patented cooling system. The cooling channels integrated in the shank guide the coolant directly to the cutting edges and ensure constant and targeted cooling in any position. At the same time, the massive cooling jet continuously flushes the chips out of the milling zone. This benefits the surface quality of the component and the tool life. Thanks to the constantly cooled tool, high operating parameters are also possible in terms of cutting speed and feed rate, which significantly reduce the machining time. In total, Mikron Tool uses 9 tools of the CrazyMill Cool family and one customized endmill for threading. To complete the whole component just 13 process steps in one clamping are necessary. To get the most out of production, the focus must be on the perfect machining strategy. Machine, tools, clamping, cooling: an interaction of all those involved that is coordinated down to the last detail delivers the targeted result. And this is unbelievable: Machining time was reduced from 42 to 27 min and in terms of surface finish, the required quality of Ra 0.4 µm was achieved. For Rz, the values were 1.1 µm.
