A Closer Look at Automatic Wire Threading with Makino's DUO-Series Wire EDMs

To be competitive, wire EDM shops need to be able to run their jobs and machines fully unattended, making flawlessly reliable automatic wire threading (AWT) capabilities a key performance factor. The first portion of this video shows a DUO64 performing AWT at 8 inches in less than 9 seconds. This is the max limit of the smaller DUO43, due to a shorter Z-axis. The second half of the video is more impressive, demonstrating the DUO64's ability to perform AWT at a full Z stroke of 16 inches in less than 10 seconds. This can be performed successfully in submerged conditions with a properly sized start hole. Open AWT operations can be accomplished through about 4-5 inches of water.
