Cogsdill Single Roll Groove Burnishing

Although Cogsdill have a wide portfolio of Standard burnishing tools, sometimes we get requests for tools, just that little bit more special... The challenge was to burnish the i/d and o/d of the face groove on a hydraulic bolt tensioner body. The Cogsdill Single Roll Groove Burnishing tool was created in response to this specific need, developed with a replaceable carbide burnishing roll. Burnishing pressure can be adjusted independently for X+ and X- using internal spring tensions adjusted via two screw adjusters, and this enables independent fine adjustments to both the inner and outer diameters of the face groove. The drawing requirements for this component were to achieve a surface finish of 0.4 Ra or better. The existing manufacturing process struggled to maintain consistent surface finishes resulting in up to 10%-15% re-work on typical batches sizes of 200 + units. The results following just one pass of the Burnishing tool were immediately apparent with a visual mirror like finish! The finish maintained throughout production with our burnishing tool is now between 0.1 and 0.2Ra, which is held consistently, and confidently throughout high production runs and at a fraction of the off line polishing. making huge savings in both time and cost to the customer.
