Drilling 1100 MPa Steel: precision & stability under extreme conditions | Seco tools
In today’s machining test, we’re pushing precision to the next level.
We begin by using our SD5402‑65‑162.5‑40R7 drill body equipped with SCGX09T308‑P1 DP2501 periphery inserts and SPGX11T3‑C1 T400D center inserts.
We’re cutting into SMG P5 steel, a tough 40CrMnMoS8 grade at 1100 MPa, the kind of material that truly exposes the performance difference between ordinary tooling and Seco engineering.
At a cutting speed of 180 m/min and a feed of 0.13 mm/rev, we maintain a stable feed rate of 115 mm/min.
This setup delivers reliable chip control, secure positioning, and consistent hole quality even under demanding conditions.
Next, we switch to the custom designed SD5301‑66‑84‑90RG drill, running the same insert combination. This customized body lets us optimize performance for deeper, more efficient drilling.
We increase the feed to 0.15 mm/rev and the feed rate to 130 mm/min, keeping the same cutting speed of 180 m/min.
The result? Smoother cutting, stronger stability, and a noticeably cleaner hole exit.
Throughout the test, both tools maintain exceptional productivity and surface integrity, despite the fact that we reduced the cutting data due to running the machine dry. If we had added coolant to the operation we could have run it even faster.
Whether you’re drilling high‑strength steels or pushing your machining center harder, these solutions help you cut cleaner, faster, and with total confidence.
