The Simmons Wheel Turning Center (WTC-60) is an affordable, compact vertical CNC lathe for the boring and machining of railway wheels. The machine incorporates an innovative traveling column design that integrates high rigidity and exceptional positioning accuracy. Simmons’ automatic extended travel table accommodates AAR-approved wheel sizes 28 through 38 inches without manual intervention. The machine is equipped with automatic pre- and post-machining measurement. The pre-machining probe cycle calculates the optimal amount of material to remove, while the post-machining probe cycle verifies the finished work piece dimensions and closes the loop on tool wear. The WTC is equipped with the easy-to-use Siemens 840D CNC control and Simmons Human Machine Interface (HMI) that uses graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and railway wheel shop nomenclature, eliminating the need for operators to learn typical machine tool programming language.
