Micro-machining a medical mold of hardened steel on Makino vertical machining center

A Makino V22 vertical machining center is hardmilling an eight-cavity medical staple mold composed of 420 stainless steel (52-54 HRc). The mold was hardmilled completely to three one-thousandths accuracy using a six one-thousandths diameter endmill, requiring no final polishing procedures. Recent advancements in hardmilling and micromilling technologies have made milling a viable and faster alternative to EDM machining.
