High Speed Machining of Mathews Bow Quiver Components

Get additional information on the high-speed machining capabilities of the a51nx horizontal machining center, visit http://www.makino.com/horizontal-machining-4-axis/a51nx/ When evaluating the productivity of a machine tool, the speed of in-cycle, non-cut operations such as B-axis rotations, rapid movements, spindle acceleration/deceleration and tool changes are critical to the total part cycle time. This video, recorded on location at Mathews, Inc. in Sparta, WI, highlights the benefits of Makino’s ability to reduce non-cut time during the production of the company’s quiver components. According to Mathews Inc., processes requiring up to 20 tool changes are not uncommon. This makes tool change time particularly critical when producing 16 of these parts per hour. By transitioning the quiver components to the a51nx, the company was able to increase throughput by 180 percent. The total cycle time for this component improved by 41 percent—dropping from 7 minutes, 23 seconds to just four minutes, 20 seconds. Additionally, the rigidity of the a51nx helped reduce vibration, producing better quality surface finishes and tolerances on bearing holes of plus or minus 0.0002 inch.
