Eagerly awaited, IMTS was finally opening its doors again after a forced break due to the pandemic. And during the break, Mikron Tool’s R&D department has been busy developing better ways to machine demanding materials in the micron range. Some of them are really "crazy". New drilling technology for titanium The high-performance material titanium is a machining challenge. In addition: not all titanium is the same. Pure titanium and alloyed titanium, for instance, both present different machining characteristics. That's why Mikron Tool has developed perfectly tailored drills for the various types of titanium: the CrazyDrill Titanium PTC for pure titanium and the CrazyDrill Titanium ATC for alloyed titanium, both guarantee ambitious cutting values and process reliability. This development offers enormous innovative power for the titanium processing industry. A drill for all types of titanium! The new CrazyDrill Cool Titanium series is offered in the diameter range of .039" – 1/4" (1 - 6.35 mm). For pure titanium, Mikron Tool developed short drills with 3 x d and drills with 6 x d. For titanium alloys, Mikron Tool relies on drills with 6 x d and 10 x d in combination with a pilot drill. Micro milling cutters The new CrazyMill Cool Micro with integrated cooling is a new type of high-performance micro-milling cutter for roughing and finishing difficult-to-machine materials. It is available in diameters from .008" - .039" (0.2 to 1.0 mm) with a milling depth of up to 5XD. Thanks to material-specific cutting edge geometries, which were specially developed for the different machining behavior of materials, the new micro milling cutter combines excellent cutting ability with high stability. The result is a significantly higher removal volume with high shape accuracy and longer tool life. A “small” world sensation! The specific material properties and the very different machining behaviour associated, were one aspect that played a decisive role in the development of this milling cutter. Two main groups of materials have been defined, each with a specific, precisely matched cutting geometry: • Geometry S was specially developed for stainless steels, structural steels, non-ferrous metals and titanium alloys. It is characterized by a higher cutting capacity for materials with a specific cutting force of less than 2250 N/mm2 (326'335 psi). • Geometry SX, featuring a special cutting-edge protection, is suitable for materials with a specific cutting force greater than 2250 N/mm2 (326'335 psi) such as heat-resistant alloys and CoCr alloys. The offer includes tool evaluation, optimization or redefinition of a process or critical sequence, tool life testing, and even drafting of complete projects.
