ISCAR TIP TALK - Groove Turn- Choosing The Right Machining Technique
Today we'll talk about choosing the most suitable machining technique when using Groove-Turn tools.
Machining pockets with Groove-Turn tools can be performed by using several techniques. The most common ones are plunging, Groove-Turn and ramp-down.
So which one is better? This depends on what we're looking for. If we seek the fastest machining cycle, we should usually choose between plunging and Groove-Turn .
A simple rule of thumb says that whenever the depth of groove is greater than 4 times the width of groove, it will be faster to widen the pocket by use of plunging.
Whenever the width of groove is greater than 4 times the depth of groove, a Groove-Turn technique will be faster.
So when do we apply ramp-down?
Whenever we need better stability and increased tool life, the ramp-down technique will be the most suitable. For example, machining pockets in exotic materials such as high temperature alloys.
